What is the purpose of office ergonomics?

Entrepreneur, Worker !!! With the pandemic have you develop any sort of pain in your back, neck, wrists or shoulders? In New Brunswick, more than 50% of workers suffer from a work-related musculoskeletal disorder, representing 1 in 2 workers.

People who work on the computer for long periods of time are at increased risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs).  An MSD is a set of painful disorders of the muscles, tendons and nerves that are often caused by overuse over time (TSNB, 2017).  It is possible to prevent the majority of MSDs with the principles of ergonomics. Have you ever heard of ergonomics?

Ergonomics is a health discipline that intervenes in the prevention of musculoskeletal disorders related to work. Our interventions consist of adapting the work to the worker rather than forcing the worker to adapt to the work.  Therefore, ergonomics makes it possible to adapt the position and work tasks to suit the morphology of the worker. The physical characteristics of the individual, the characteristics of the tasks to be performed and the organizational constraints are taken into account in order to offer an intervention specifically adapted to each individual and each workstation.

By applying the principles of ergonomics in the workplace, this makes it possible to considerably reduce the number of injuries and health problems of workers.

Here are some advantages of adapting your workstation:

  • Prevent injuries
  • Reduce the pain already present
  • Improving productivity and quality of work
  • Understand the binding positions to avoid
  • Become aware of our working position

Ergonomics are often associated with office work, but think again!

Ergonomics can be applied in all areas such as:

  • Office work
  • Work on a production line
  • Handling work in a warehouse
  • Food sector
  • Pharmaceutical sector
  • Health care workers
